Christ Our High Priest

“Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus” (Hebrews 3:1).

Jesus Christ is called the High Priest because He is the Mediator of the New Testament: “To Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel” (Hebrews 12:24).

In the Old Testament, a priest mediated between the people and God. Aaron and his descendants were appointed high priests. “And no man takes this honour to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was” (Hebrews 5:4).

But in the New Testament Jesus Christ, like the high priest of old times, stands in the gap between the people and God, as it is written: “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5).

God spoke of the Word of God as our High Priest long ago through David, saying, “The Lord has sworn and will not relent, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek” (Psalm 110:4).

The Word of God is the everlasting High Priest, and His priesthood is based on Melchizedek’s priesthood and authority: “Having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually” (Hebrews 7:3).

Whereas the former human high priest were many in number as they were prevented by death from continuing, but the Word of God is an unchangeable High Priest  because the Word abides forever (see Matthew 24:35).

Scripture is far superior to any human priest because the Word of God can save anyone who comes to God through Him, since the Scripture is always living and interceding for them (see Hebrews 7:25).

Today, we no longer need to go through human priests. No human priest can save anyone. The Word of God has removed the need to go through earthly priests. God is accessible to all who believes in His Word, there is no difference at all (see Acts 15:9).

The most important thing for us to understand is that because the Word of God is our High Priest, in this New Testament, anyone who believes in the Scripture can come to God with confidence (see Hebrew 10:19).

Everyone is free to approach God through the Word. Christ the Word of God has removed the limitation through the one sacrifice of Himself. “But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God” (Hebrews 10:12).

God, through the Scripture, has reinstituted relationship with mankind. Anyone sanctified through the Word have their conscience purged from dead works: “For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14).

The Holy Bible is the only way to God, the Scripture is the truth of God, and the Word of God is the life of God. That’s why Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

PRAYER:
Dear Father, open my mind to see your Word as our High Priest, who is holy and able to save us, in Jesus name. Amen.
