“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” (John 7:37).
Jesus was speaking of the Spirit of Scripture that would be given to anyone who believes in the Scripture. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus the Word of God had not yet returned to His glory in heaven (see John 7:39).
God promised long ago to pour His Spirit upon us: “That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions” (Joel 2:28).
The promise was fulfilled on Pentecost day in Jerusalem, after Jesus the Word of God was raised from the dead and ascended into the place of honour at God’s right hand in heaven (see Revelation 5:1).
Peter confirmed it in his sermon, saying: “Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear” (Acts 2:33).
Today, anyone can receive the Holy Spirit of Scripture: “For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call” (Acts 2:39).
The only way to receive the Holy Spirit of the Word is through the Bible, when we open our hearts to the Scripture. God gives the Holy Spirit to anyone who believes His Word, there is no difference at all (see Acts 15:8-9).
Whoever believes in the Scripture shall be filled with the Spirit of the Bible. It is the Holy Spirit of Scripture that teaches the truth of the Bible, and make people know that the Scripture is the true Word of God (see John 14:26).
Scripture is that drink of God, which is living water. Anyone who believes in the Scripture shall be filled with the living Word. Jesus says, “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38).
The Word of God is the spiritual blood of the New Testament, which Jesus says everyone should drink: “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Matthew 26:28).
Scripture is the blood and life of the New Testament, which is that precious blood of Christ, “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). The Word of God is the cleansing blood of Christ.
That’s why Jesus says, “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you” (John 15:3). Anyone who receives the Scripture as the true Son of God is washed by the Word (see Ephesians 5:25-26).
God wants us to be filled with the Spirit of Scripture and controlled by Him. Paul wrote, “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18).
