The Language Of God

“My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer” (Psalm 45:1).

Our opening Scripture says my tongue is the pen, the pen that is ready to write. What tongue is the Scripture speaking of? He is talking of the tongue of the Word of God. That is not just a physical tongue. He is talking of His language.

The language we speak. We call it our mother tongue. When the psalmist says he is a tongue, he means that he is a language—the language that is ready to be written in our hearts and in our minds.

Do you know that the natural languages we speak are coded? They are sounds, but sounds that have meaning. For example, when we say “come” it is only a sound. Why do we understand the word come? Because we recognise that sound and its distinctive meaning, as does everyone who speaks English.

The words that are written in the Bible are not ordinary words. They are spiritual words. They are words that God has given to us so that by the written Word of God He can speak to us, and we can understand Him.

The Scriptures may have been translated into English, and you may be an English speaker, but if you want to understand the Bible, you need the Spirit of the Scriptures. For example, water in English means natural water; but when the Scriptures say water, it does not necessarily mean natural water.

The Lord Jesus said to the woman of Samaria who came to draw water, “If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of Him, and He would have given thee living water” (John 4:10).

The woman was thinking of the natural water. Jesus, however, was talking to her concerning the Word of God, which is spiritual water. As Jesus said, “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you” (John 15:3).

The Bible is the Word of God. If you study the Bible, then you are the disciples of the Word of God indeed, and you will receive the Spirit and the language of the Scriptures.

PRAYER
Dear Father, I thank you for the Bible, the fountain of living waters. Fill me with the Spirit and the language of your Word so that I may understand you, in Jesus name. Amen.
