The Treasure Of God

“Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys” (Luke 12:33).

Jesus likened God’s Kingdom to a hidden treasure. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field” (Matthew 13:44).

That hidden treasure is the Word of God, which is everlasting treasure that came from heaven. Scripture says, “But the word of the Lord endures forever. Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you” (1 Peter 1:25).

The Word of God is the greatest treasure on earth, and will never be removed; no one can destroy them; no government can replace them. The psalmist says, “I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure” (Psalm 119:162).

Scripture has tremendous value. We should treasure the Word of God far more than physical and material wealth. Many people are still learning the hard lesson that no amount of material possessions will provide lasting satisfaction.

All earthly treasures can be stolen or destroyed, and do not last forever. But the Word of God is “the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). Nothing is more enduring than the Word of God which abides forever.

When we build our lives on the solid foundation of God’s Word, the rain and wind of change may come, but we shall not fall because the Word does not change. The assurance of God’s Word means that the Scripture cannot fail (see John 10:35).

The Bible is the treasure book of divine promises that must be fulfilled. That’s why those who love the Scripture have perfect peace. Scripture says, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You” (Isaiah 26:3).

One of those divine promises is that the Word of God has power to give eternal life. God has given the Scripture authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to as many people as receive the Word of God (see John 17:2).

Those who receive the Word of God have received a wonderful treasure that makes them children of God. John wrote, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12).

However, merely having a copy of the Bible is not enough. The Lord said to Joshua, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it” (Joshua 1:8).

Many of us need to get back to the Word of God. We should make a commitment and allocate a set time to read and study our Bible every day. Doing so will help open our eyes to the great treasures of the Bible.

PRAYER:
Dear Father, thank you for teaching us the value of your Word, and making us know that Scripture is more valuable than material wealth, in Jesus name. Amen.
